The donation also targets healthcare facilities, internally displaced persons and women's empowerment groups, as the Fon of Nkwen calls for peace and reconciliation
Handing over of computers to GBSS MbelemDr. Ndonwie Peter has extended support to the Nkwen community in Bamenda III Subdivision through donations of computers, educational materials, clothing and medical equipment.
The donations were handed over on Thursday, November 5, at the Nkwen Palace Plaza during a ceremony organised in collaboration with the Nkwen Village Council and the Pan-African Organisation for Humanitarian Assistance (PAORP-VWC).
The package included 20 computers for the Nkwen ICT Centre, two computers for Government Bilingual Secondary School (GBSS) Mbelem, teaching and learning materials, and assorted clothing for internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The Nkwen Women Empowerment Group also received two computers and 100 T-shirts, while Nkwen District Hospital and Nkwen Health Centre benefited from medical equipment to strengthen healthcare delivery.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Ndonwie said the intervention was driven by his attachment to Nkwen and his desire to give back to the community, particularly as families continue to struggle with the effects of the ongoing crisis in the North West Region.
He explained that the computers donated to the ICT Centre would give students and other people, greater access to digital skills, research and information technology.
He stressed that education and healthcare were essential to community development, adding that supporting schools and health facilities remained an important part of his commitment to Nkwen.
Dr. Ndonwie disclosed that his humanitarian activities in the community dates back to 2016, when he began organising free eye-screening exercises and distributing medicated glasses.
He announced that another edition of the initiative would take place before the end of November, with about 1,400 people expected to benefit from free eye screenings and glasses.
Beyond the donations, the ceremony provided an opportunity for the Fon of Nkwen, His Royal Majesty Fon Azefor III, to make a passionate appeal for peace, forgiveness and reconciliation.
The traditional ruler welcomed the community dialogue approach being promoted by the Head of State, describing it as an important step towards rebuilding trust and restoring peace in the North West and South West Regions.
He called on those involved in violence, kidnappings and other activities disrupting community life to abandon their weapons and embrace peace. He also urged them to take advantage of the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme.
The Fon assured those willing to renounce violence that they would be welcomed back into the community, insisting that forgiveness and reconciliation should begin within families before extending to the wider society.
He further called on the villagers, including those who originally come from other communities, to consider themselves part of Nkwen and contribute to its development.
On education, the Fon emphasised the need to strengthen technical and vocational training to equip young people with practical skills and improve their chances of becoming productive members of society.
He thanked Dr. Ndonwie for his continued support, describing such interventions as important in addressing the needs of vulnerable families and creating opportunities for young people.
Meanwhile, the Pioneer Principal of GBSS Mbelem, Tangie Joseph, welcomed the school's share of the donation, describing it as timely.
He confirmed that the school received two computers and accessories, books for its library and clothing for some underprivileged students.
According to him, the materials would improve access to learning, support teaching activities and provide assistance to students facing financial difficulties.
The Nkwen Village Council and PAORP-VWC are expected to oversee the supported facilities to ensure that the donations serve their intended purposes and provide lasting benefits.
