Over 150 Holiday workers within the Tubah Municipality have been commissioned as Climate-Smart and Adaptive practice ambassadors with a call for them to be leaders of efforts to combat Plastic Pollution, flooding and other Environmental challenges within their communities.

The call was made August 14th 2026 during the closing ceremony of a Month long holiday at the Tubah Council, presided out by Mayor Tanjong Martin while raising awareness on how plastic bottles and other solid waste can be detrimental to the environment.

Speaking to the holiday workers, the Representative of the University of Bamenda under the TAGDEF 2.0 program Lohshie Eugen Velon, stressed that piles plastic waste found on water ways are not merely an eyesore but a clear how human activities contribute vulnerability to climate change while highlighting the program's involvement with the holiday makers.

"As far as the program is concerned, we had an opportunity to deliver a 2-day workshop where these young youths of the municipality were trained on various issues on civic responsibility,6 entrepreneurship, with the intentions of job creation and employability, but also not forgetting aspects of sustainable development. As they came to an end, the end of their experience with the Council during this holiday period, it was an opportunity for us today to go down to the field to witness firsthand issues of negative environmental practices that are affecting the communities. Typical among this particular practice is the poor disposal of plastic waste, where we were able to see tons and tons of plastic bottles that have clogged an entire bridge or an entire suckerway". Drainage channels and water ways are designed to facilitate the free movement of rain water most especially during wet periods and periods of heavy rainfalls and thus should be kept clear of plastic bottles, bags and other solid waste which are a main course for flooding and other pollutions.

As the newly Commissioned Climate Ambassadors  get back to their communities they have as an assignment, to make Environmental Protection a daily responsibility while encouraging others to adopt climate smart practices according to Mayor Tanjong Martin.

"They should abide to environment cleaning, the proper management of the environment no matter their ages. As from the youngest child to the oldest, we should be on the same train".

Mayor Tanjong Martin Backs Environmental Action

Mayor Tanjong Martin, present on site with the holiday workers, underscored the importance of responsible waste management and environmental protection.

His presence reinforced the council's commitment to encouraging young people and communities to taking active participation in addressing environmental challenges and promoting cleaner and more resilient communities.

The initiative comes at a time when communities within the North West and other parts of the Country are facing heightened risks of flooding and erosion during this rainy season. With Blocked drains and waterways  worsening the impact of heavy rainfall, making proper waste management an important component of climate adaptation.

The message is therefore clear: what communities put into their environment can ultimately return to them through contaminated water, polluted soil, unhealthy surroundings and increased exposure to climate-related hazards.
