Mezam SDO, Bamenda City Mayor Warn Population Evacuate Flood, Landslide-Prone Areas

The Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam and the City Mayor of the Bamenda City Council have raised an alarm as heavy rains continue to increase the risks of flooding, landslides and building collapse.

The population of Bamenda have been warned to remain vigilant and leave high-risk areas as the rainy season reaches its peak, with the SDO, Simon Emile Mooh, expressing concern over the growing threat of floods, landslides and building collapses.

The warning was first issued by the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh, in a press release dated Monday, August 17, 2026.

The SDO said recent heavy rains and incidents recorded across the city showed that several neighbourhoods, particularly low-lying areas, are highly exposed to weather-related disasters.

In Bamenda I, the areas identified as vulnerable include Abangoh, Akefu and Ntasie.

In Bamenda II, the risk zones include Ntambag, Njamgma, Mulang, Ngomgham, Ntanka Njankah, Njimafor and Mbatu.

In Bamenda III, the administration identified Sisia I, II, III and IV, New Layout, Below Foncha, Mile 6 Nkwen, Ntenefor, Mugheb and Ntasen as areas requiring particular caution.

Residents living close to waterways and drainage channels have also been urged to take extra precautions.

The SDO called on them to respect town-planning regulations and other safety measures designed to protect lives and property. Mayors, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders were also asked to intensify public awareness and preventive measures.

The warning came as Bamenda continued to experience heavy rainfall and flooding in several neighbourhoods.

On Tuesday, August 18, the Bamenda City Council issued a fresh alert following inspections of areas affected by recent floods and landslides.

In a communiqué signed by City Mayor Achombong Tambeng Paul, the council said the situation in some parts of the city was serious and called on residents in high-risk locations to evacuate.

The council specifically warned people living along waterways, in flood-prone areas and on landslide-prone hillsides to leave those locations.

The people were also urged to stop dumping waste into drains and waterways, while those obstructing drainage channels were warned to clear them.

Radio stations in Bamenda have been requested to repeatedly broadcast the evacuation and safety message to ensure that residents receive the warning.

The latest alerts follow a series of weather-related incidents in Bamenda in recent weeks, including flooding and the reported disappearance of children in floodwaters.

Authorities have not provided casualty figures linked to the latest floods and landslides.

With heavy rains expected to continue, the Mezam administration and Bamenda City Council are urging residents to take the warnings seriously and avoid areas where floodwaters, unstable slopes or overflowing drains could put lives at risk.

For denizens, the message from the authorities is clear: do not wait for the next heavy downpour before moving away from danger zones.
