Two UBa Students Shot Dead by Gunmen in Bambui

Two students of the University of Bamenda were killed in a shooting incident in Bambui, Tubah Subdivision, on Monday, June 8, 2026, according to local sources. The victims were identified as Mirabel Kunyi, a student of the Higher Teacher Training College (HTTC–ENS), and a male student of the Higher Technical Teacher Training College (HTTTC–ENSET), who was also working as a commercial motorcycle rider.

Witnesses said the shooting occurred at a location known locally as C Bend in Bambui. Reports indicate that Mirabel Kunyi was travelling on the motorcycle when unknown armed men opened fire. She reportedly died at the scene, while the motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to two.

Earlier reports had indicated that one University of Bamenda student had been killed in the attack. The victim was initially reported to be a student in the Department of English Modern Letters, although her identity had not been officially confirmed at the time because her identification documents were reportedly destroyed during the incident. Subsequent findings, however, confirmed that two students lost their lives in the shooting.

Local reports suggest the attack may have been linked to an attempted kidnapping that allegedly occurred earlier in the day near Bambui Hospital.

Sources claim armed men were pursuing an individual who had escaped from their custody, but it remains unclear whether the victims were directly targeted or were caught in the violence. The exact circumstances surrounding the shooting have not yet been established.

No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and authorities had not released an official statement at the time of reporting. Security forces are expected to investigate the incident to determine the circumstances of the killings and identify those responsible.

The latest attack comes amid continuing insecurity in the North-West Region, where the ongoing armed conflict has affected many communities. Bambui and neighbouring Bambili, both located near the University of Bamenda campus, have witnessed several violent incidents in recent weeks.

The shooting occurred barely a week after another fatal attack was reported in Bambili. The persistent insecurity continues to disrupt education, economic activities, and daily life, while civilians, including students, remain vulnerable to the violence.
