Several businesses were destroyed and others badly damaged after a fire broke out in Bamenda during the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026.
The fire started shortly after 1:00 a.m. along Old Treasury Street in Bamenda II Subdivision, near the 3rd District Police Station, according to local residents.
Among the businesses affected were a documentation centre and a carpentry workshop, both of which were completely destroyed by the flames. A nearby printing shop also suffered significant damage.
Business owners lost equipment, materials, important records, and customer documents, resulting in substantial financial losses. The destruction has left many traders worried about how they will recover and resume their activities.
Witnesses said residents initially faced difficulties contacting emergency services, as attempts to reach rescue teams by telephone were reportedly unsuccessful. Some residents later travelled to a military post in Mulang to seek help directly.
Firefighters eventually arrived at the scene and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings. However, by the time the fire was brought under control, much of the affected property had already been destroyed.
The cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined. Some residents suspect that an electrical surge may have triggered the incident after electricity was restored following a power outage. Others reported hearing an explosion shortly before the fire started. These claims, however, have not been independently verified.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the cause of the fire. Meanwhile, efforts are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and determine the losses suffered by the affected businesses.
