Notaries and solicitors from the North West Region have gathered in Bamenda for a workshop focused on improving their understanding of tax laws and professional responsibilities.
The workshop, held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, brought together legal practitioners to discuss the theme “The Notary Public and His Fiscal Obligations.” It was organized to help participants better understand how to handle property transactions, especially in relation to proper value declaration and compliance with taxation rules.
Speaking during the session, the President of the Cameroon Bar Association, Mbah Eric Mbah, stressed the importance of integrity in the profession. He reminded notaries and solicitors that they have a duty to strictly respect the law in all their activities. According to him, even though many practitioners work correctly, there are still some who fail to follow the rules, which affects the image of the profession. He urged them to always act within the law in order to protect their credibility and maintain public trust.
He also encouraged practitioners to maintain good relationships with their clients while respecting both legal standards and local traditions. He expressed confidence that the training, supported by an expert from Douala, would help participants improve their knowledge and ensure better compliance with the law.
The workshop covered several key areas, including the duties of notaries, proper record keeping, taxation laws, and the correct way to declare property values during transactions. Organizers said the goal is to promote transparency and reduce errors or malpractice in the handling of legal documents.
The Special Delegate to the Bar President, Njie Jude Mokom, explained that the training was necessary because of gaps observed among both young and experienced practitioners. He noted that many are not fully updated on recent changes in tax laws, especially those related to property conveyance. According to him, the workshop serves as both a refresher course and an opportunity to align all practitioners with current legal requirements.
Participants are expected to apply the knowledge gained to improve their daily practice, ensure proper tax compliance, and contribute to a more transparent legal system in the region.
