Some 35 women at the postnatal ward of the Bamenda Regional Hospital have received support from the Bikelle Foundation in a gesture aimed at assisting new mothers facing difficult conditions.
The women, who recently gave birth, were offered essential items including detergent, diapers, baby wipes, chlorine water, and some financial support to help meet their immediate needs. The initiative brought relief and joy to many of the beneficiaries, especially those struggling to care for their newborns.
Speaking on the situation at the ward, the Major of the Postnatal Unit, Senior Nurse Maimo Mary, described the donation as timely and necessary. She explained that many patients admitted at the facility are unable to pay their hospital bills or afford basic items for their babies. According to her, staff often have to make extra efforts just to ensure that some mothers have food and basic care, adding that the burden is heavier for single women.
She further noted that in some cases, the hospital’s social service department steps in to assist patients who are unable to settle their bills or meet basic needs, but the demand often exceeds available support.
The atmosphere at the ward was filled with gratitude as the mothers expressed appreciation for the support. Many said the items received would help them care for their babies and ease some of the financial pressure they are facing.
One of the caregivers, Mama Cecilia, thanked the foundation for remembering them during such a critical moment. She noted that the assistance will go a long way in helping mothers provide for their children and possibly settle part of their hospital expenses.
Explaining the reason behind the visit, the Vice President of the foundation, Mohammadou Aminou Bala, said the difficult situation in the North West Region motivated the outreach. He stated that the foundation is committed to supporting vulnerable people affected by the crisis and giving hope to those in need.
Operating under the motto “restoring hope, rebuilding futures,” the foundation plans to continue its humanitarian activities across communities.
The Bikelle Foundation, which was founded two years ago by Dr Bih, who is based in the United States, has been carrying out support initiatives aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable groups, particularly women and children affected by hardship.
