Bamenda City Council Delivers Aid after rehabilitating Roads in Mbatu, Chomba, Nsongwa

A partial view of the aid

Three villages in Bamenda II Subdivision have received humanitarian support after receiving improved road access as local authorities step up efforts to promote peace and recovery in the area following years of crisis.

The City Mayor of the Bamenda City Council, Achobong Tembang Paul, led a visit to Nsongwa, Mbatu, and Chomba, where relief items were distributed to residents at the esplanade of the Nsongwa Fon’s Palace on Sunday, 19 April 2026.

During the exercise, essential items including bags of rice, mattresses, and blankets were handed to the population. Each of the three villages received 50 mattresses, 60 blankets, and 60 bags of rice. The city mayor explained that the items were part of a larger consignment provided by the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.

City Mayor Paul Achobong in Nsongwa

Speaking after the distribution, City Mayor Achobong said the gesture was not only about providing material support but also about promoting unity and peace among the people. He encouraged the people to embrace reconciliation after years of hardship, noting that peace remains the foundation for development. He added that his visits to different communities are aimed at strengthening social cohesion and showing the benefits of living in peace. He also expressed appreciation to President Paul Biya and the government for supporting such initiatives.

The visit comes after the Bamenda City Council rehabilitated about 12 kilometers of earth roads linking Mbatu, Chomba, and Nsongwa. The road works have greatly improved movement between the villages, especially for farmers who now find it easier to transport their produce to markets.

While expressing gratitude for the developments, the people appealed for more support, particularly the tarring of the roads to further ease transportation. The mayor acknowledged their request, explaining that while the council can maintain earth roads, the construction of tarred roads requires intervention from higher authorities. He assured the population that their concerns will be forwarded.

His Majesty, the Fon of Nsongwa

The Fon of Nsongwa, His Majesty Fonguh Emmanuel Ndi Fonwade III, who spoke on behalf of the communities, thanked the government and the city council for both the humanitarian aid and the road rehabilitation. He noted that the villages had suffered greatly during the crisis, with many people losing their homes and belongings. According to him, the support has brought relief to many families and improved living conditions.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stating that the community is determined not to return to the difficult times they experienced. He described peace as valuable and necessary for progress.

The mayor was accompanied by a delegation that included officials from the Ministry of Territorial Administration and the Government Emergency Humanitarian Assistance Plan for the North West Region.

Authorities say the intervention is part of ongoing efforts to support communities affected by the crisis and to encourage stability and development.
