City councillors of the Bamenda City Council have voted the sum of 5 billion Francs as budget for 2026.
The city councillors bites the budget in a plenary session held on Wednesday 17th December 2025 in Bamenda.
Speaking at the session, the City Mayor of Bemenda, Achombong Tambeng Paul said the budget is focused on:
✓ focus on the maintenance and construction of road
✓water and electricity
✓ hygiene and sanitation
✓ food self sufficiency
On the maintenance of roads, the City Mayor said the urban perimeter of the town is currently under construction while the projects under the French debt relief fund (C2D) are also ongoing. He says the city will benefit from the engineers of these companies currently working in Bamenda to work on secondary roads and link them to the urban roads.
"Road maintenance has been a major challenge because of the ongoing crisis. But things are gradually getting back to normalcy. The situation has greatly improved and it is time to focus on the roads." The city Mayor said.
To further improve on the road works in town, the City council most recently purchased an excavator and a compactor. Contrary to information on the social media, the two heavy duty equipment are in Bamenda and constitute the 2025 public investment projects of the city council which has been executed at 100%.
As concerns water and energy, the city council plans to construct boreholes and build water schemes in areas not currently covered by Camwater. One of such areas the city Mayor mentioned is Nkar in Bamenda I subdivision. While transformers will be provided to quarters that have had prolonged electricity blackout.
In hygiene and sanitation, the city Mayor said the situation has greatly improved but much work is still needed to make Bamenda the town of reference. To this end, dumping of garbage at the Bamenda commercial avenue has been prohibited while trucks are expected to collect the garbage from 9am. "One truck collects non-biodegradable waste while another collects biodegradable waste" Mayor Achombong said.
The city Mayor also remarked that manure gotten from biodegradable waste will be channeled to the farms to improve the food self sufficiency of the region.
Of the 5 billion Francs budgeted, 2 billion francs goes for investment while 3 billion has been set aside for recurrent expenditure. The 2026 budget is the same as the 2025 budget.
The City council has also set aside an annex budget of about one billion francs to carter for unforeseen and emergency projects in the Municipality.
Reacting to the budget, the SDO of Mezam, Simon Emile Mooh congratulated the councillors for adopting a realistic budget and called on all the councillors to work relentlessly for the realization of the budget.
Key challenges facing the city council as at the moment is the completion of the ongoing construction of the Bamenda main market and the city hall of the city council which has been lingering for the last seven years.
