The Divisional Officer of Tubah, Massango Metougue Narcisse and the Mayor of Tubah Council, Tanjong Martin have saluted the initiative of Senator Elizabeth Regina Mundi to donate the proceeds of her book in the fight against Maternal mortality.
The two officials praised the efforts of the senator as Tubah is a beneficiary of her fight.
On the 21st April 2022, Senator Mrs Regina Mundi donated delivery kits to some 200 women drawn from the 11 health areas of Tubah. Health vouchers were handed to the women while complicated pregnancies were adequately handled and the bill footed by the senator.
The Divisional Officer told The Observer that maternal mortality has witnessed a significant drop in the subdivision owing to constant education and follow-up of pregnant women which was initiated by the senator.
"I can tell you that pregnant women have adopted better measures. This includes beginning their clinic days early, getting diets that suit their conditions and having a close follow-up from the medical personnel in the subdivision." Massango Metougue Narcisse said.
To Mayor Tanjong Martin, the scheme went on for a year and the results were remarkable. "We came here today to support our mother who has brought a lot of smiles to the women of Tubah. Expenses of pregnant women were taken care of from April 2022 to April 2023. We are happy that the Senator is going to launch this again. It will put a lot of smiles on the faces of women." Tanjong Martin said.
In 2020, an estimated 438 women per 100,000 live births died from pregnancy-related complications, according to the World Bank’s Gender Data Portal. While maternal mortality declined slightly to 406 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2022, progress has been slow, and maternal health challenges persist.
Limited access to quality reproductive healthcare, high adolescent pregnancy rates—where 108 out of every 1,000 girls aged 15-19 give birth—and persistent nutrition gaps continue to put the health of mothers and newborns at risk. Without urgent and sustained interventions, preventable deaths will continue, placing an even greater strain on families and communities.
The initiative of Senator Mrs Regina Mundi has been saluted across the board.
