Three persons with special needs residing in the Bamenda I Council area have received empowerment tools.

Unlike before where the council only aids those living with disability to carry out their activities, the council executives have decided to move to empowerment.

In collaboration with the services of social affairs,  three persons were identified. One living with mobility and speech impairment, another with visual impairment and the third, an orphan.

While handing over a printer, a white cane and a tailoring machine respectively, the Second Deputy Mayor of Bamenda I, Annatou Abrams said; . "We have discovered that disability is not inability, rather than giving them crutches and wheelchairs all the time, we have decided to empower them to be self-reliant and help their juniors too." Mayor Annatou said.

Ndi Sivoline receiving a sewing machine

Ndi Sivolin, a 20-year orphan, living in the crisis stricken North West Region, life has not been easy.

"This is God's kindness towards me. I'll go and start my own business and start making my own money. This will permit me to help other people, my junior ones and people around me." Sivoline said.

From a family of two, Sivoline narrated that she has struggled with her school needs since their parents died and it has had a toll on her grandparents. Operating her own business will make life more comfortable for her and the family and she can return to the classroom much later.

Sandrine receiving a printer

To Sandrine, staying in school was difficult because of her disability. She told The Observer that catching up with her classmates was very difficult. She has speech and mobility impairment. With this disability, Sandrine thinks operating her own business will be better for her. "I will use this printer to support my work and take care of myself." She said.

Mayor Annatou Abrams pledged the council's willingness to continue to work relentlessly to meet the needs of the population especially those with disabilities.
