The 53rd edition of National Day celebrations in Bafut, like in other parts of the North West Region, went on unperturbed. The event was presided over by the subdivisional Officer (D.O) of Bafut, Fokou Njukeng Andelys, who expressed appreciation for the local population’s massive turnout, commending them as a people who understand both their rights and responsibilities.

"I want to begin by congratulating the local population for their sense of maturity and for braving the odds to come out in large numbers to express their joy in belonging to a unitary state, one and indivisible Cameroon," the D.O. declared. "I call on all the forces of Bafut to collaborate with the defense and security forces so we can restore and maintain long-lasting peace in this subdivision that was once vibrant. As the theme of this year’s celebration rightly states, we cannot have peace without the involvement of the population. We are counting on them."

The celebration also saw a vibrant show of force by militants of the Cameroon People's Democratic Movement (CPDM), led by Mayor Ngwakongoh Lawrence, who also serves as Section President for CPDM Mezam IV. The militants dominated the march past, singing songs pledging support for another seven-year mandate for President Paul Biya.

"The massive turnout of CPDM militants today is the result of the hard work we've done since assuming leadership of this municipality," said the mayor. "We use this celebration to thank President Paul Biya for the developmental projects granted to Bafut. We stand firmly behind him as we look toward October. We ask for even more development because, as they say, you don’t change a winning team."

Also speaking at the event, the Member of Parliament for the Bafut/Tubah constituency, Hon. Agho Oliver, praised the spirit of the people.

"I saw a people committed to the vision and aspirations of our great leader. I saw Bafut residents determined to move the nation forward, willing to serve, ready to unite for a peaceful Cameroon. That is the spirit I witnessed today, May 20th, and it makes me very happy," the MP said.

The occasion was marked by the awarding of medals to two gendarmerie officers in recognition of their service. One recipient said, "Today, I am a happy man after serving in the military for ten years. This recognition motivates me to work even harder. I thank my superiors for seeing me as deserving of this honor."

The May 20th celebration in Bafut concluded with jubilant traditional dances, leaving a strong impression of unity and renewed hope in the community.
