The North West Regional Assembly has provisionally received the newly completed Mutan Market in Bamenda III Subdivision, a project expected to boost trade and strengthen the region's economic development.
The market, constructed by Dreamland Connect at the Industrial Zone in Nkwen, was officially handed over to the Regional Assembly during a ceremony held on Friday, July 31, 2026. The project was financed through the, Local Governance and Resilient Communities Project (PROLOG) and implemented under the leadership of the President of the North West Regional Assembly.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of Dreamland Connect, Edison Fru Ndi, said the company secured the contract through a competitive national tender and successfully completed the project despite several technical and administrative challenges.
He explained that the company maintained high construction standards throughout the project and even exceeded some of the contract specifications. According to him, Dreamland Connect installed a 30 KVA solar power system instead of the 25 KVA initially required. The company also added handrails on the staircases and erected a flagpole without compromising the quality of the work.
Valued at about 410 million FCFA, the Mutan Market project includes a modern market building, 54 market sheds, a borehole with a 10,000-litre water storage system, solar-powered electricity, internal and external sanitation facilities, and other supporting infrastructure designed to improve the working environment for traders.
Receiving the project on behalf of the Regional Assembly, its Executive President, Prof. Fru Angwafo, described the market as a major step towards transforming the North West Region into an important commercial and logistics centre.
He said the Mutan Market is part of a broader vision that includes the construction of a customs clearance centre, conference facilities and a proposed inland dry port that will facilitate trade between Cameroon, Nigeria and other neighbouring countries.
According to Prof. Angwafo, the wider project is expected to create at least 5,000 jobs, strengthen agricultural value chains, promote agro-processing and expand export opportunities for businesses in the region.
He called on the population to protect and make good use of the facility, stressing that community ownership would be essential for its long-term success.
The President of the Regional Assembly also highlighted the institution's Peace and Development Initiative, describing it as a non-political programme aimed at promoting peace, creating employment opportunities and encouraging the participation of all citizens, regardless of their political affiliation or educational background.
The Mayor of Bamenda III Council, Fongu Cletus Tanwe, welcomed the completion of the project, saying it would revive economic activities within the industrial zone and reduce the difficulties faced by businesses that currently travel to Douala for customs clearance.
He praised the vision of the North West Regional Assembly and commended Dreamland Connect for demonstrating that local companies have the expertise to successfully deliver major public infrastructure projects.
Also speaking during the ceremony, His Royal Highness Fon Azehfor III of Nkwen assured the Regional Assembly of the community's full support in protecting the market and maintaining peace around the site.
The traditional ruler said the market, together with the planned inland dry port and other development projects, would create jobs, stimulate business activities and improve the livelihoods of people across the North West Region.
The provisional handover of the Mutan Market marks an important milestone in the Regional Assembly's efforts to promote economic recovery, attract investment and position the North West Region as a strategic centre for commerce and cross-border trade.
