The newly constructed bridge over the River Nyong at Malombo has been inaugurated.
The bridge was officially put into service on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, by the Minister of Public Works, Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi, during a ceremony that also served as an opportunity to review government support to Regional and Local Authorities (RLAs) in the Nyong-et-Kellé Division.
Speaking at the event, the Minister said the construction of the bridge forms part of the government's policy to modernise the country's municipal road network while strengthening the decentralisation process through the transfer of financial resources to local councils.
According to the Minister, the ten councils in Nyong-et-Kellé Division have received a total of FCFA 8.86 billion in transferred resources between 2018 and 2026 to finance local development projects, particularly in road infrastructure.
Eséka Council received the highest allocation of FCFA 1.32 billion, followed by Bot-Makak with FCFA 1.06 billion, Makak with FCFA 1.04 billion, Matomb with FCFA 986.68 million, and Nguibassal with FCFA 977.63 million.
Emmanuel Nganou Djoumessi explained that these funds have enabled councils to implement several road and infrastructure projects aimed at improving mobility and stimulating economic activities across the division.
He noted that Nyong-and-Kellé has an extensive road network stretching over 2,920.72 kilometres, making sustained investment in road infrastructure essential for connecting communities, facilitating trade and improving access to basic services.
Beyond the resources transferred to councils, the Minister said the Ministry of Public Works continues to finance additional projects through its Public Investment Budget. These investments are intended to complement council-led initiatives by rehabilitating and constructing strategic road infrastructure that supports agricultural production, commerce and local economic development.
The commissioning of the Malombo Bridge is expected to significantly improve movement between communities separated by the River Nyong. Farmers and transporters are expected to benefit from safer and more reliable access throughout the year, particularly during the rainy season when crossings the river often become difficult.
The government says the continued transfer of resources to Regional and Local Authorities reflects its commitment to empowering councils to take greater responsibility for local development while ensuring that infrastructure projects respond directly to the needs of their communities.
The Malombo Bridge is one of several projects being implemented under the Ministry of Public Works' strategy to expand road connectivity, improve access to rural areas and support economic growth through better transport infrastructure.
