A businessman has been shot dead in Bamenda, bringing the number of civilian killings in and around the North West regional capital to at least three in a week and renewing concerns over the security of successful young men.
The victim, Njiwah Gerald, 37, was a tomato trader at the Bamenda Food Market and a native of Bessi in Batibo Subdivision.
According to family members, unidentified gunmen attacked Gerald at his residence before fleeing the scene. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility. Security authorities have also not announced any arrests or provided details on ongoing investigations.
Gerald's death comes just days after the killings of Ngong Clifford, a businessman who was shot dead at a roadblock in Sabga while returning from a funeral, and Azanui Clifford, who was killed in Nkwen under circumstances that also remain unclear.
The latest incident has heightened fears among the population, many of whom say civilians continue to bear the brunt of the armed conflict in the North West Region.
In recent months, cases of targeted killings, kidnappings and attacks on travellers have continued to be reported across the region, with both urban centres and rural communities experiencing growing insecurity.
As investigations continue, the deaths of Njiwah Gerald, Ngong Clifford and Azanui Clifford have once again highlighted the fragile security situation in the North West Region, where many civilians remain caught in the crossfire of the ongoing conflict.
