The Social Democratic Front (SDF) has declared that it will not accept any postponement of Cameroon's forthcoming municipal and parliamentary elections, insisting that the polls must be held as scheduled.
The party's position was made known by its National Chairman, Hon. Joshua Osih Nabangi, during a press conference held on July 23, 2026, at the SDF National Secretariat in Olezoa, Yaounde.
Speaking to journalists, Osih said the SDF would do everything within its power to ensure that elections take place in all parts of the country, including the conflict-affected North West and South West regions.
"We will leave no stone unturned for elections to hold in the North West and South West regions. We cannot continue to leave our country in the hands of those who do not respect Cameroonians," he said.
The SDF chairman also called on eligible Cameroonians who have not yet registered to vote to do so before the August 31, 2026 deadline set by Elections Cameroon (ELECAM). According to him, a high voter turnout will give citizens the opportunity to hold leaders accountable through the ballot box.
On the prolonged stay of President Paul Biya abroad, Osih said the Head of State should inform Cameroonians about his situation, arguing that as the country's highest public institution, the President has a duty to keep citizens informed.
"From a political point of view, the President of the Republic should inform Cameroonians on what is happening to him abroad, just as he informed us when he travelled for a brief private stay. He is an institution and he owes us that information," Osih stated.
The opposition leader urged Cameroonians to support the SDF in the upcoming elections by voting for the party's candidates in municipal and parliamentary polls. He said electing SDF councillors and Members of Parliament would help bring about the political change the party is advocating.
Osih further remarked that President Biya could confidently return to Cameroon, referring to recent statements by the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Manaouda Malachie, that the country's hospitals are well-equipped to provide quality healthcare.
The SDF's latest declaration comes as political parties continue preparations for the forthcoming municipal and parliamentary elections, with voter registration and political mobilisation intensifying across the country.
