A new doctoral study has found that social media is becoming an important tool in supporting the mission and ministry of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC), with Facebook and WhatsApp identified as the church's most effective online communication platforms.
The findings were presented on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, when Rev. Dr. Numfor Godwin successfully defended his PhD dissertation at Wesley University in Ondo, Nigeria.
The research examined how five major social media platforms—WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and Instagram—are helping the PCC carry out its mission.
According to the study, Facebook and WhatsApp are the most widely used platforms by the church. They have improved communication among members, strengthened Christian fellowship, and enabled pastors to provide spiritual support even when they cannot meet people physically.
The research also found that digital platforms have helped church leaders stay connected with members who live far away or are unable to attend church activities in person.
Following the successful defense of his dissertation, Rev. Dr. Numfor was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree after earning an A grade for his research.
Speaking after the defense, Rev. Dr. Numfor thanked the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, Rt. Rev. Miki Hans Abia, for his encouragement and support throughout his studies. He also expressed appreciation to the PCC and its former leadership for giving him the opportunity to pursue higher education while continuing his ministry.
Based on the findings of his research, Rev. Dr. Numfor recommended that the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon adopt a hybrid ministry approach, combining traditional face-to-face pastoral work with digital evangelism and online communication.
He also encouraged the church to invest in digital equipment and training so that pastors and church members can use social media more effectively, responsibly, and safely.
The study comes at a time when many churches across Africa are increasingly using digital technology to expand evangelism, improve communication, and strengthen relationships with their members.
Rev. Dr. Numfor began his doctoral studies during the 2023/2024 academic year, and his PhD will be formally conferred during Wesley University's convocation ceremony in November 2026.
