The Nkambe Municipal Council has launched a new project to turn discarded plastic waste into durable pavement blocks.
The project is taking place at the Council’s waste transformation site in Binju led by the Mayor, Musa Shey Nfor.
Council officials say the main goal is to tackle the problem of plastic pollution in the municipality. Instead of allowing plastics to litter streets, drainages, and open spaces, the Council is collecting the waste and recycling it into useful construction materials.
The pavement blocks made from the recycled plastic will be used for to pave pedestrian tracks, public spaces, and other project sites within Nkambe. The Mayor say this will help reduce waste while also saving money on construction materials.
“This initiative shows our commitment to protecting the environment and finding local solutions to local problems,” Mayor Musa Shey Nfor told The Observer. “We want a cleaner Nkambe and at the same time promote innovation and sustainable development.”
By turning waste into valuable products, the Council hopes to encourage the population to keep their environment clean. The council also believes the project can create awareness on proper waste disposal and inspire other communities to do the same.
Nkambe Council have emerged for a second year running, the cleanest City in the North West Region thanks to such initiatives undertaken by the Mayor.
