In a notice addressed to the Governor of the North West Region, the staff delegates and employees of councils in Mezam Division said the strike would continue until further notice. They explained that the action was intended to draw the attention of the authorities to their long-standing grievances and push for an urgent solution.

According to the employees, the salary reduction followed the introduction of a new salary scale by the Senior Divisional Officer (SDO) for Mezam in 2023. They said the measure had seriously affected their finances and living conditions.

The employees stated that they had made several attempts to resolve the matter peacefully through the appropriate channels, but their efforts had not produced a satisfactory result.

They said the decision to strike came after repeated attempts to reach an agreement with the authorities failed. The workers maintained that they had not taken the decision lightly but were acting out of frustration over the failure to address their concerns.

In their notice, the employees appealed to the Governor to intervene urgently and facilitate discussions with the relevant authorities to find a lasting and peaceful solution.

Their main demand is the review of the salary scale imposed on council employees in Mezam Division. They are also calling for the cancellation of the 35% salary reduction introduced in 2023 and the restoration of their salaries under an agreed and appropriate salary scale.

The workers further want the authorities to respect a court judgment and a statement of total conciliation relating to the matter. They are also demanding the reinstatement of their seniority bonuses in accordance with Prime Ministerial Decree No. 2021/3353/PM of June 17, 2021.

The notice was copied to several officials, including the SDO for Mezam, the Regional Delegate of Labour, officials of the Ministry of Decentralisation and Local Development (MINDDEVEL), mayors of councils in Mezam Division and law enforcement authorities.

The employees expressed hope that the Governor's intervention would help bring about a fair and satisfactory solution for both the workers and the councils concerned.

The planned strike comes after more than three years of disagreement over the salary scale and the reduction in workers' pay. The employees are now calling for urgent action to address their demands and improve their working and living conditions.
