Prof Maurice Kamto, Former National President of the MRC

Professor Maurice Kamto has resigned from his position as National President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC).

In a letter dated September 8, 2026, addressed to members of the party, Kamto said he had taken the decision in what he described as the “best interest” of the party, its numerous militants and sympathisers, and the people of change in general.

“I have decided to resign from the functions of National President of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC),” Kamto stated in the letter.

He added that the decision takes effect from September 8, 2026, the date of the letter.

The former MRC president did not give specific reasons for his resignation in the brief statement.

Kamto addressed the party leadership as “Dear Political Friends” and concluded by expressing his appreciation to members of the Directorate.

The resignation comes as a major development within the MRC and the wider Cameroonian political landscape, with Kamto having served as one of the country's most prominent opposition figures.

The letter was signed by Professor Maurice Kamto.
