Nearly FCFA 10Million was disbursed today to more than 300 students recruited by the Bamenda City Council as part of its 2026 Summer Holiday Job Scheme. Each student received 25,000 FCFA in financial compensation.
The payments were made during a ceremony held Thursday, August 27, 2026 at the Bamenda City Council Hall in Mulang, Bamemea II subdivision. The event was presided over by First Deputy Mayor Ndoh David Chi.
As part of the program, students were deployed across Bamenda I, II and III subdivisions to carry out environmental sanitation and city cleaning activities. The initiative aimed to promote public hygiene and maintain a cleaner, healthier urban environment during the holiday period.
Beyond manual work, participants received structured training in Civic Education, Responsible Citizenship, the Fight Against Drug Abuse, and the Functioning of Decentralization. According to council officials, the students demonstrated commitment, discipline, punctuality and a strong community service ethic throughout the program.
Each beneficiary was also presented with a certificate of participation.
Speaking to The Observer,18-year-old Ngwi Emmanuelle, one of the beneficiaries, said she was "overwhelmed with joy" after receiving both the money and certificate.
"The money will help me buy school materials for the upcoming academic year,"she added.
Council officials say the Holiday Job Scheme is part of broader efforts to engage youth productively during vacation, provide financial relief ahead of the back-to-school period, and instill civic responsibility.
