A 31-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with the death of a newborn baby whose body was found in a pit toilet in Cisia, Nkwen, Bamenda III Municipality.
The incident came to light after neighbours reportedly noticed blood stains around the woman’s residence. Their suspicions reportedly grew because the woman, who had recently been pregnant, was no longer showing signs of pregnancy.
According to information gathered, neighbours questioned her about the whereabouts of the baby, but she reportedly denied knowing anything about the child. The matter was later reported to the police, leading to her arrest.
During questioning, the woman allegedly provided information about what had happened to the newborn, prompting authorities to call in the Army Rescue Unit to assist in recovering the body.
The rescue team, led by Commander Taku Paul, reportedly retrieved the baby’s body from the pit toilet.
Investigators also reportedly arrested a traditional medicine practitioner identified as Saidou. According to information gathered during the investigation, the woman allegedly told authorities that Saidou had provided her with a concoction linked to the incident.
The woman was subsequently handed over to medical personnel for examination as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about unwanted pregnancies, access to reproductive health information and the risks associated with unregulated traditional medicines and other substances.
Community leaders and health workers are being encouraged to strengthen education on family planning and ensure that women and girls have access to reliable reproductive health information and appropriate medical services.
Authorities have not yet made public the full circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death. The investigation is continuing, and those arrested are presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court.
