Authorities in Bafut Sub-Division of Mezam Division, North-West Region, have stepped up preparations for the 2026/2027 academic year, with a focus on reopening more schools and keeping public examinations within the subdivision.
The new school year begins nationwide on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Chairing a preparatory meeting in Bafut, Divisional Officer Forku Djokem Andrelys said the functioning of secondary schools remains a major priority. Only two government secondary schools were functional in Bafut during the last academic year.
He called for more secondary and basic education institutions to reopen, stressing that children should be able to study within their communities.
Authorities are also preparing examination centres at GNS Agyati, GBSS Nsoh and the Social Centre Agyati, with the aim of ensuring that public examinations are written in Bafut.
The subdivision is expected to introduce Form One technical and grammar education this year, creating more opportunities for students to continue their education locally.
Meanwhile, Bafut recorded encouraging results in basic education examinations. The Inspectorate of Basic Education reported a 100 per cent success rate in both the General Common Entrance and Common Entrance Technical examinations, while the First School Leaving Certificate recorded 98.13 per cent.
The Bafut Council has also promised support to schools. First Deputy Mayor Chesi Miriam said didactic materials and benches have been prepared for distribution to functional schools when classes resume. The council has also introduced a special package for pupils and students who register early.
The Divisional Officer urged teachers to demonstrate greater punctuality, regular attendance and commitment, while calling on parents and community leaders to support efforts to keep schools functional.
Security also featured prominently during the meeting. The DO appealed to parents, traditional rulers, religious leaders and other stakeholders to work with the administration and security forces to create a safe environment for learning.
He further called on youths involved in armed activities to abandon violence and embrace reintegration opportunities through the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process.
With the new school year just days away, authorities say the priority is clear: reopen more schools, keep them functional and ensure Bafut children have access to education within their communities.
