The Kom Kingdom in Boyo Division of the North West Region has entered a period of mourning following the announcement that its traditional ruler, Fon Clement Ndzi II, is "missing," the customary expression used to announce the passing of a Fon.
In the Grassfields tradition, particularly in Kom and several other fondoms in the North West Region, a Fon is not publicly said to have died. Instead, the ruler is declared "missing" or to have "disappeared," symbolising the transition from the world of the living to that of the ancestors. The expression reflects the sacred status of the Fon, who is regarded not only as a political leader but also as the spiritual custodian of the kingdom.
The announcement marks the beginning of a carefully organised succession process governed by long-standing customs and traditions. During this period, palace activities are expected to be restricted while traditional institutions take charge of rites associated with the transition of power.
Central to the process is the Kwifoyn, the influential traditional regulatory society that works alongside palace authorities to preserve order and ensure that all customary procedures are observed. A series of traditional rituals, many of which are conducted in secrecy, will take place before a successor is identified and prepared for enthronement.
Unlike hereditary monarchies where the eldest son automatically succeeds the ruler, the Kom Fondom follows a matrilineal system of succession. Under customary law, the next Fon is selected from the royal maternal lineage, with the choice guided by established traditions and the custodians of the kingdom's customs.
The successor will undergo a period of initiation and preparation before being publicly presented to the people during elaborate traditional ceremonies. It is only after these rites have been completed that the new Fon officially assumes the throne and the responsibilities of leading the kingdom.
The passing of a Fon is one of the most significant events in the life of the Kom Kingdom, drawing members of the community from across Cameroon and the diaspora back to Laikom, the seat of the fondom, to participate in mourning and the succession rites.
