Tiko Council has begun preparations for the 2026 National Clean City Contest following its victory in the South West Regional Clean City Competition.
The Mayor of Tiko Council, HRH Dr. Peter Ikome Mesoso III, on Monday, July 20, 2026, chaired a strategic planning meeting to map out the municipality's participation in the national competition, where it hopes to improve on its previous performance.
The meeting brought together the Fourth Deputy Mayor, Waindim Rudolf, the Chief of General Affairs, Mrs. Coretta Etugengolle Makia, Chiefs of Services and Bureaus, as well as staff from the Technical Services, Town Planning, and Hygiene and Sanitation departments.
Discussions focused on strategies to strengthen the council's performance during the national contest. Participants presented proposals aimed at improving environmental sanitation, beautifying public spaces and ensuring that Tiko meets the standards required to compete successfully at the national level.
Having emerged as the South West Region's Clean City Champion for 2026, Tiko Council is now setting its sights on winning the national title. The municipality is also determined to improve on the fourth-place finish it achieved during the 2023 National Clean City Contest.
Addressing council staff, Mayor Peter Ikome Mesoso III urged every worker to demonstrate commitment, discipline and professionalism as preparations move into the field phase, which officially began on July 20.
He emphasised that winning the national competition would require teamwork and dedication from all council staff, as well as the active participation of the local population in keeping the municipality clean.
The mayor further called on residents, community groups and other stakeholders to support the council's efforts by maintaining proper sanitation, protecting the environment and promoting a culture of cleanliness throughout the municipality.
According to him, the collective effort of council workers and the population will be crucial in helping Tiko achieve its ambition of bringing the National Clean City trophy to the municipality, popularly known as the "Gateway Municipality."
With field activities now underway, Tiko Council hopes to build on its regional success and position itself among the country's cleanest and best-managed municipalities when the national contest is held later this year.
