Administrative authorities in Tubah Subdivision have announced new security measures following the killing of two students of the University of Bamenda and the shooting of a medical doctor in separate incidents that occurred in Bambui on Monday, June 8, 2026.
The incidents have sparked fear and concern among residents, coming amid ongoing insecurity linked to the Anglophone crisis in the North-West Region.
Speaking to *The Observer* in a telephone interview, the Divisional Officer (DO) of Tubah, Massango Metougue Narcisse, confirmed that investigations have been opened to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attacks.
According to the DO, preliminary findings suggest that the armed men responsible for the attacks had concealed themselves in nearby farms for several hours before carrying out their operations.
"The separatist fighters hid themselves in the farms for long hours. From the preliminary report, it appears they were around the area, but information about their presence was not reported to the competent security services," the Divisional Officer said.
The two students killed on Monday
He disclosed that additional security measures have been introduced, including the clearing of vegetation along the main highway linking Bambui and Bambili. Authorities believe this will improve visibility and reduce hiding places often used by armed groups.
The Divisional Officer also strongly condemned the attack on a medical doctor, describing it as unacceptable.
Medical Doctor Shot Inside Hospital Premises
Dr. Nyombov Clinton shot on both legs
Dr. Nyombov Clinton of Family Faith Clinic in Nkwen was attacked on the afternoon of June 8 while returning from a sporting activity in Bambili.
According to information gathered, two armed men on a motorcycle intercepted the doctor. In an attempt to escape, Dr. Clinton reportedly ran into the Tubah District Hospital seeking refuge.
Witnesses say the attackers pursued him into the hospital compound and opened fire, shooting him in both legs.
The attack caused panic among patients and hospital staff, many of whom fled the facility for safety as gunshots rang out.
Despite the danger, the hospital director and medical personnel quickly intervened, carrying the wounded doctor into the emergency unit where they began life-saving treatment.
Dr. Clinton was later transferred to the Bamenda Regional Hospital for specialized care. Medical sources indicate that he suffered severe injuries, including shattered bones and significant blood loss. He remains in critical condition.
Monday's attack have shocked the university community especially those of Bambui, many of whom are questioning the continued insecurity in an area frequented by students and civilians.
Concern Over Attacks on Civilians
The latest incidents add to a growing list of violent attacks recorded in the North-West Region, where civilians, students, healthcare workers and public facilities have increasingly found themselves caught in the crossfire of the ongoing Anglophone conflict.
Healthcare professionals and medical facilities are protected under international humanitarian law and should not be targeted during armed conflicts. The shooting of a doctor within a hospital environment has therefore raised serious concerns among people and medical practitioners.
Silence from Rights Groups
As of the time of filing this report, no major human rights organization had publicly condemned the killing of the students or the shooting of the medical doctor.
Many observers have noted that the victims were unarmed civilians, raising questions about the level of attention being given to attacks against ordinary citizens in conflict-affected areas.
The incidents also occurred on a Monday, a day traditionally marked by ghost-town restrictions across the English-speaking regions of Cameroon. Although such restrictions have persisted for nearly a decade, emergencies and essential activities continue to force many residents to travel on Mondays, sometimes exposing them to significant risks.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing, while authorities have assured the public that measures are being taken to strengthen security and protect lives and property in Tubah Subdivision.
