Senator Prof. Nebah donates farm inputs, Strengthens Food Production in Bamendankwe

Senator Mrs Nebah handing over maize seedlings to women

Senator Prof. Nebah Ndosiri Bridgette Ndoye has continued her support to farmers in Bamendankwe in 2026 with the distribution of improved seeds and food items aimed at boosting agricultural production and food self sufficiency in the community.

This year, the senator distributed one ton of Irish potato seeds, 500 kilograms of improved maize (red corn) seedlings, and rice to women farmers in Bamenda I Subdivision. The support is expected to improve crop yields and encourage large-scale farming in the area.

Speaking during the event, Senator Nebah encouraged women to increase their production.

“I want Irish potatoes to flood the streets of Mendankwe and beyond. I urge you out mothers to farm on a larger scale so that you can feed your families families and even export to other areas.

"When I pass through Santa I see Irish potatoes littered  all around the streets. We can do that here with the right inputs and follow-up of our farms. So I want us to start exporting irish potatoes to other communities after this planting season." Senator Nebah said.

She explained that the timing of the seed distribution was chosen in consultation with the quarter heads to match the farming season.

Mayor Mbigha Felix of Bamenda I

The Mayor of Bamenda I, Mbigha Felix, thanked the senator for providing seedlings to the community, saying the initiative would help ensure food self-sufficiency.

“Thank you for thinking about food. Without food, you cannot live. Empowering women is empowering the community,” the mayor said. He also announced that the Safety Net Phase Two project will begin the following week, with the registration of women. About 1,000 women are expected to benefit, he said.

The Divisional Officer (DO) of Bamenda I, Nchofon Mingoh, described the initiative as laudable. He praised the senator’s love for the community and encouraged residents to continue supporting her development efforts.

Beneficiary, Mary Asangana

To appreciate the Senator for the wonderful offer, one of the beneficiaries, Mary Asangana, a resident of Ntamafe Quarter, the improved seeds represent more than agriculture. It actually breathes hope.

“The improved maize seeds given to me will go a long way to improve my production and change the lifestyle of my family. After harvesting, I will sell some to send my children to school, use some for food, and even help my neighbours.” Mary Asangana said.

She credited Senator Nebah with reducing family burdens in the subdivision and described the empowerment and said such an empowerment will deter youths from going wayward.

This year’s intervention follows a similar initiative carried out by the senator in 2025.

On March 22, 2025, Senator Nebah organized a one-day workshop at the Bamendankwe Fon’s Palace Hall to train farmers on how to improve Irish potato production and practice soil conservation. The training was organized in collaboration with the Bamenda I Municipal Council and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER).

The workshop brought together women farmers who had earlier complained about poor-quality seeds and lack of access to modern farming techniques. Agricultural experts trained them on improved planting methods, soil conservation, and the proper use of chemicals and spraying schedules to protect crops from insects.

Senator Nebah celebrating with women

At the time, Senator Nebah explained that Irish potato is a stable crop in Mezam Division and the North-West Region but noted that many women were facing difficulties in production. She emphasized the need to equip them with the right knowledge and tools to increase yields and improve their income.

Community leaders, including Mr. Forche, Secretary General of the Quarter Heads Association, said the training was successful and praised the role played locally by Ngu Michael Scott, the President of the association in championing the initiative.

During this year’s event, a representative from the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment also educated women on their rights and responsibilities as part of the 41st edition of International Women’s Day, under the theme  “Rights, Justice and Actions for All Women and Girls.” The women were sensitized on protection against gender-based violence and the importance of empowerment.

Senator Mrs Nebah used the occasion to educate women that nation-buikding is not a male issue alone.

“Women and men, boys and girls, must participate in complementarity to build and safeguard our country and our communities. By registering to vote, they decide the destiny of our country. I encourage all the women to register that's and vote during the upcoming municipal and legislative elections." She said.

In addition to the agricultural support, Senator Nebah handed out Women’s Day fabric to the women of Bamenda I, recognizing their role in community development.

Through training last year and seed distribution this year, Senator Prof. Nebah continues to show her commitment to women’s empowerment, as the distribution came a few days to the celebration of the 41st women's day in Cameroon.
