Youth leaders from the 64 quarters of Nkwen, in Bamenda III Subdivision, have been drilled on entrepreneurship and community development.
During a meeting with the CPDM Section President for Mezam IC, Che Ndaka Nicolas (Member of the North West Regional Assembly), the youths were enlightened on the importance of entrepreneurship and their role in national unity and reconciliation.
Presenting on the theme, “Youth in the Promotion of development, National Unity and Reconciliation,” Che Ndaka Nicolas explored five key areas.
He emphasized the importance of young people taking a central role in inter-generational dialogue, highlighting that youths are uniquely positioned to engage with everyone, from their peers to their parents, and to transmit messages of peace, unity, and dialogue. He also urged the youth to engage in community work, reminiscent of the yesteryears where the villagers used to carry out communal labour together. According to Che Ndaka, such collective action fosters peace and social cohesion.
He stressed that through consistent messages of peace, trust can be rebuilt, allowing for greater youth involvement in the community. He was categorical that the coming together of young people in key sectors like agriculture can foster the spirit of entrepreneurship.
The Divisional Officer for Bamenda III, Austin Saka, reinforced this message by advocating for youth engagement in agriculture and livestock production.
“There are so many opportunities in the agricultural and livestock sectors. To be candid, what I earn from my farm is incredible. If our young people in this subdivision can harness their entrepreneurial spirit, they will be the ones to fund future development projects in this community,” the DO remarked.
He encouraged the youth to visit his farm for inspiration and pledged to share his knowledge with hardworking and motivated young individuals.
As the youth listened attentively, His Majesty Fon Azehfor III, Fon of Nkwen, called on them to become shining examples and emulate their elder brothers.
The Fon underscored the values of hard work, dedication, discipline, and foresight.
“The first thing I want to tell them is to hold firm to our culture. It teaches hard work, community service, and respect. A youth rooted in culture never fails. I also urge them to acquire a skill or pursue technical education. With technical training, there’s no room for failure, unemployment, or over dependence,” the Fon said.
He also criticized the trend of selling land just to indulge in drinking, urging the youth to build a future everyone can be proud of.
Speaking on behalf of the youth, the Vice President of the Youth Movement, Neba Franklin, assured the community that they will not bring disgrace to the village. He praised the numerous initiatives put in place for their benefit and pledged to make the most of them.
Neba Franklin also appreciated the various football and sporting competitions organized to keep the youth engaged during the summer holidays. He affirmed their commitment to working toward the development and prosperity of Nkwen.
The education and awareness event was attended by quarter heads and other key development stakeholders.
