At a period where the world is facing rapidly changing geopolitics and increasingly complex threats, there is need for close collaboration between key sectors such as defense and telecommunications.
It is on that backdrop that leading communications body Cameroon Telecommunications, CAMTEL has partnered with the Nigerian Army College of Logistics and Management, NACOLM for Senior Leadership and Staff Officers to enhance cybersecurity within both countries.
This was the focus of a visit by the Nigerian delegation at the CAMTEL headquarters in Yaounde Thursday September 12, 2024.
Deputy Commandant/Director of Studies at NACOLM Brigadier General JIB Manjang led the delegation of 29 Senior Leadership and Staff Officers at NACOLM.
The head of the delegation expressed the hope that cooperation between the State of Nigeria and Cameroon would be strengthened to effectively combat cybercrime in the region.
They were welcomed by Technical Adviser No 1 at CAMTEL, Francis Ottou, who highlighted that the mission was under the aegis of the Ministry of Defense, which he said was “proof of the confidence placed in CAMTEL as a strategic partner in the preparation of our future military leaders, a responsibility we take seriously and with dedication”.
The mission he said highlights the growing security challenges both countries are facing. “This visit is part of a drive to strengthen skills and share knowledge between our two countries — historic allies that have overcome shared crises in the past and worked towards lasting regional stability” he added.
With the cyberspace being a new front for war and security as opposed to the limited traditional battlefields, cybercrime represents a global threat that can destabilise entire states and CAMTEL as the pillar of Telecommunications in Cameroon plays a central role in this new invisible war.
“We are committed to securing our infrastructure and protecting data, aware that every flaw in our network can become a tool in the hands of opposing forces. In this respect, I am convinced that the sharing of expertise with your armed forces will enable us to better anticipate and more effectively manage looming threats” explained Francis Ottou.
