CAMTEL to pay half of the installation cost to bring high-speed internet to schools in the Adamawa, Far-North and North Regions

Cameroon Telecommunications, CAMTEL, has signed a major agreement with the Ministry of Secondary Education, MINESEC, to connect 130 secondary schools in the northern part of the country.

The framework agreement was signed on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at MINESEC’s Distance Learning Centre in Yaounde.

The partnership is aimed at bridging the digital divide in secondary education.

According to details from the agreement, the project will cover 130 secondary schools in three regions: Adamawa, Far-North, and North. This comes after a request from MINESEC to interconnect schools in these regions.

Under the deal, CAMTEL will pay 50% of the cost of installing the internet connection in all 130 schools.

But the partnership goes beyond just providing internet.

Both institutions agreed to work together on a long-term basis in several areas, including; Hosting of digital learning content, Protection of school data, Continuous technical support for students, teachers and school administrators

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the General Manager of CAMTEL stressed that the goal is not just to connect the schools, but to make sure the internet works when it is needed.

“A connection only fulfills its mission when the service is functional and actively used. Our requirement is simple: when the class begins, the network must deliver.”

Officials say the initiative aligns with the vision of the President of the Republic, Paul Biya, to promote skills development for young people and ensure equal access to education in all regions.

CAMTEL also noted that the internet infrastructure installed for the schools could also benefit surrounding communities, including local councils, small businesses and the population, where technical conditions allow.

After the signing, technical teams from CAMTEL and MINESEC will now draw up a work schedule and a list of priority schools. The teams will also monitor the quality of the connection and help teachers and students learn how to use the new digital tools.

The project is expected to boost distance learning, e-learning, and access to digital resources for thousands of secondary school students in the northern part of Cameroon.

Mafor Judith Yah Sunday Epouse Achidi signed on behalf of CAMTEL while Minister Nalova Lyonga signed on behalf of the Ministry of Secondary Education.
