Cameroon football is mourning the death of football legend Jean Manga Onguéné, who passed away this morning in Paris at the age of 80 after an illness.

Manga Onguéné, who won the African Ballon d’Or in 1980, was popularly known as “The Golden Head” because of his exceptional heading ability.

Born in Ngoulemekong on June 12, 1946, he became a symbol of loyalty to Canon Sportif of Yaoundé, the only club he played for from 1966 to 1982.

During his career with Canon, he won six league titles, six Cameroon Cups and three African Champions League titles.

He earned more than 100 caps for the Indomitable Lions and helped Cameroon finish third at the 1972 Africa Cup of Nations.

After retiring as a player, Manga Onguéné went on to coach the national team and later worked as a FIFA instructor.

In June, Yaoundé paid tribute to the football icon as he celebrated his 80th birthday.

Cameroon has lost one of its greatest football legends.
