Several Injured as Gunmen Attack Vehicles on Bamenda–Fundong Road

Bullet holes on the cars

Several passengers were injured over the weekend after suspected armed separatists attacked a convoy of vehicles along the Bamenda–Fundong road in the North West Region.

According to reports, the attack occurred near the seminary, a few kilometres before Fundong. The convoy, which included a vehicle carrying a prominent notable from Kom, came under heavy gunfire when armed men reportedly emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire on the passing vehicles.

Witnesses said the drivers quickly accelerated and managed to escape the first ambush.

However, a short distance ahead, another group of gunmen allegedly blocked the road with a motorcycle and launched a second attack. During the exchange, the windscreen of one of the vehicles was shattered by bullets, while another vehicle lost control and plunged into a nearby valley.

Passengers were later rescued following the swift intervention of defence and security forces stationed at a nearby checkpoint. A military truck was dispatched from Bamenda to evacuate the injured to hospital for treatment.

Although no deaths were reported, several passengers sustained injuries during the attack.

In a separate incident on Tuesday, July 7, armed men reportedly attacked several vehicles around Bamesing along the Bamenda–Ndop road. Reports indicate that three passengers were abducted, while drivers and other travelers were forced to hand over money and other valuables.

The latest attacks have heightened fears among road users in the North West Region, particularly along the Bamenda–Fundong, Bamenda–Ndop and Bamenda–Wum highways. These roads have witnessed repeated incidents of armed attacks, kidnappings and robberies, leaving many travelers increasingly concerned about their safety.
