The 2026 edition of the Pinyin Peace and Unity Tournament has officially kicked off with a strong call for peace, unity, discipline and community development through sports.
The opening ceremony took place on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at the Longla Comprehensive College School Field, where football lovers, traditional authorities, youth and community members gathered to witness the start of the annual competition.
The tournament is organised by the Pinyin Youth Organization for Rural Development (PYORD) as part of efforts to promote peaceful coexistence, discover young sporting talents and strengthen unity among the people of Pinyin.
The opening match saw Sunday Sharp FC take on Mitanyen FC, setting the stage for weeks of exciting competition involving 15 football teams from across the community.
In a message of encouragement delivered at the opening ceremony from the Fon of Pinyin, HRM Asobo Kenneth III, he praised the initiative and described it as an important platform for promoting peace, unity and community development through sports.
The traditional ruler urged players to compete with discipline, respect the rules of the game and accept both victory and defeat with dignity.
He also called on referees to remain impartial and uphold the highest standards of fair play throughout the tournament.
The Fon expressed hope that the competition would not only identify talented young footballers but also strengthen the bonds that unite the people of Pinyin despite the challenges facing their community.
He further encouraged organisers to learn from past experiences and use every challenge encountered as a lesson for improving future editions of the tournament.
The tournament's main sponsor, Mekom Samuel Taleh, reaffirmed his commitment to supporting youth development in Pinyin through sports. He disclosed that this year's programme goes beyond football and will also feature activities in the village aimed at bringing more young people together.
According to him, while one million francs CFA has been allocated for the football competition, other sporting and educational activities including handball, debates and a marathon race will cost an estimated five million francs CFA.
Mekom Samuel Taleh also announced that Government High School Kwang is expected to reopen its doors this year, describing the development as a significant step towards restoring normal life and improving access to education in the area.
Organisers say the tournament is not only about winning trophies but also about encouraging friendship, promoting peaceful coexistence and creating opportunities for young people to showcase their talents.
They expressed gratitude to sponsors, partners and members of the community whose support has made the 2026 edition possible.
As the competition gets underway, the people of Pinyin are hopeful that the tournament will continue to serve as a platform for peace, unity and development while inspiring young people to build a brighter future through sports.
