Mayor Musa Shey Nfor wearing a white helmet, the architect of the Clean Nkambe
Nkambe has once again emerged as the cleanest municipality in the North West Region after winning the 2026 Regional Clean City Competition, extending its dominance in one of the region's most prestigious environmental contests.
The victory means Nkambe Council, led by Mayor Musa Shey Nfor, will represent the North West Region at the national phase of the Clean City Competition, where it hopes to improve on its impressive second-place finish recorded in 2024.
According to the official regional rankings, Fundong Council finished in second place, followed by Tubah Council in third. Elak, Ndop and Furu-Awa completed the top six municipalities in the regional contest.
By retaining the regional title, Nkambe has maintained an impressive record in environmental sanitation and urban cleanliness, reinforcing its reputation as one of Cameroon's leading municipalities in waste management and public hygiene.
The Clean City Competition evaluates councils on several criteria, including waste collection and disposal, sanitation, environmental protection, drainage maintenance, beautification of public spaces, and community participation in keeping towns clean.
Keep Nkambe clean truckLocal authorities have attributed Nkambe's continued success to sustained investment in sanitation programmes, regular community clean-up campaigns, improved waste management, and the active participation of residents in maintaining a clean environment.
The municipality has also encouraged households, traders, schools and community groups to embrace proper waste disposal practices and take ownership of environmental protection.
The latest victory comes two years after Nkambe achieved national recognition by finishing second in Cameroon's Clean City Competition in 2024, an achievement that brought pride to the North West Region and highlighted the council's commitment to environmental excellence.
With another regional title now secured, attention shifts to the national competition, where Nkambe will once again compete against winning councils from the country's other regions. This time, council officials and the population of the North West hope to return home with the national championship.
The beauty of a clean Nkambe
Mayor Musa Shey Nfor has consistently made environmental sanitation one of the council's development priorities, with initiatives aimed at improving waste management, keeping streets and public spaces clean, and promoting healthy living conditions.
The population have welcomed the latest recognition, describing it on social media, as a reward for the collective efforts of the council, traditional authorities, sanitation workers, youth groups, women's associations and the entire community.
Many believe the award will encourage residents to continue protecting the environment and inspire other municipalities in the North West Region to strengthen their sanitation programmes.
As preparations begin for the national competition, expectations are high that Nkambe will once again fly the flag of the North West Region and build on its previous success by bringing home the country's top Clean City award.
