Moghamo United FC made a strong statement of intent on Thursday July 9, 2026 as they defeated Momo Sports Academy 3-0 in the opening match of the 2026 Momo Divisional League, marking the official launch of the football season in the division.
The encounter, played before an enthusiastic crowd, signalled the start of what the Momo Divisional League President, Tamah Collins describe as a renewed effort to revive grassroots football in Momo Division and create a pathway for talented young players to progress to higher levels of the game.
Speaking during the launch ceremony, the President Tamah Collins described the competition as the beginning of "a new era" for football in the division. He said the initiative aligns with the vision of FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto'o, who has repeatedly pledged to return football development to the grassroots.
"We are beginning a new era because we have plans to take football back to the grassroots," Tamah said. "This is the vision of our national president, Samuel Eto'o.
"Our objective is to give local talents the opportunity to grow and compete at higher levels." He hailed Moghamo United's return to competitive football, noting that the club has a rich history in the North West Regional League and remains one of the division's traditional football institutions.
"Moghamo United is not a team of today. It has existed for many years, and I believe the people of Batibo are proud to see the club back in the divisional championship. We hope this is only the beginning of another successful journey."
Tamah Collins also commended Momo Sports Academy for joining the competition, saying the academy represents the future of football development in the division.
Reflecting on last season's achievements, he revealed that two clubs from Momo Division earned promotion to the regional league, with Momo United FC going on to represent the North West Region at the Interpools in its debut regional campaign.
He expressed confidence that Moghamo United could follow a similar path this season. "If they remain focused and continue working hard, they have every chance of qualifying for the regional league and even competing at the national Interpools," he said.
The league president announced that although this year's competition was launched outside Mbengwi, the divisional headquarters, the grand finale will be staged there. "We want to assure the people of Mbengwi and the entire Momo Division that arrangements have already been made for the final to be played in Mbengwi," he said.
Five clubs are taking part in this season's championship, with one team resting on each matchday. Teams will compete on a home-and-away basis before the top two sides meet in the final. The overall winner will secure automatic promotion to the North West Regional League.
Moghamo United captain Princewill Anjeh attributed his team's impressive opening-day victory to determination and teamwork. "It was a very good game, and I thank God for the victory. We will continue giving our best in every match, and my ambition is to help the team win the league while fulfilling my dream as a footballer," he said.
Asked whether his side could emerge champions, the skipper expressed confidence. "With the work we are putting in, I believe it is possible," he said.
The convincing win gives Moghamo United an early advantage in the title race and raises expectations that the club could become the next Momo side to earn promotion to the regional championship.
