Mayor Chenwi Peter presenting the partnership agreement to the PIC
The Mayor of Bamenda II Council, Chenwi Peter, has presented the council's waste management and transformation project to the North West Public Independent Conciliator (PIC), Tamfu Simon Fai, describing it as a major step towards addressing sanitation challenges and creating employment opportunities in the region.
The presentation was made on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, during a debriefing and benchmarking workshop on the public's perception of the functioning of Regional and Local Authorities. The workshop, organised by the Office of the Public Independent Conciliator in Bamenda, brought together mayors and council officials to review governance practices and share successful initiatives.
Addressing participants, Mayor Chenwi Peter said the waste management project marks a turning point in the way waste will be collected, processed and transformed in Bamenda and, eventually, across the North West Region.
As part of the session, the mayor presented the project's commitment letter to the Public Independent Conciliator, informing participants that development partners are expected in the coming days to begin feasibility studies ahead of the project's implementation.
He said the initiative has the potential to transform waste from an environmental burden into an economic resource while creating jobs for young people and improving public health.
Mayor Chenwi Peter used the opportunity to invite his fellow mayors across the region to partner with Bamenda II Council in implementing the initiative.
"This is a life-transforming project. I wish to invite my fellow colleagues to partner with me to ensure that our young people are gainfully employed, waste is properly managed and our population is protected from diseases associated with poor sanitation," the mayor said.
Reacting to the presentation, North West Public Independent Conciliator Tamfu Simon Fai commended the mayor for his commitment to improving service delivery and pursuing innovative solutions to local development challenges.
He described the waste management initiative as a project that deserves the support of councils across the region, stressing that effective waste management is essential for environmental protection, public health and sustainable urban development.
The presentation formed part of broader discussions at the workshop aimed at promoting good governance, accountability and the sharing of best practices among councils in the North West Region.
