A serious fire has completely destroyed the State Counsel's Chambers in Mamfe, the headquarters of Manyu Division in the South West Region. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The incident caused major damage and has disrupted the work of the local justice system.
The fire started around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 25. It spread very quickly through the building, destroying offices, equipment, and important documents.
People who witnessed the incident said they first heard a loud explosion before the building caught fire.
"We suddenly heard a loud bang, and then smoke and flames started coming out of one of the offices. People ran in different directions to save themselves," said a worker who did not want to be named.
Staff members said they were carrying out their normal duties when the fire broke out. The sudden incident caused panic as workers rushed out of the building.
Although some people tried to save office property, the fire was too strong.
"The flames spread so fast that nobody could do anything. Everything inside was destroyed," another worker said.
Early reports show that office furniture, computers, legal files, and many important administrative documents were lost in the fire. Officials have not yet completed a full assessment of the damage, but they fear the loss of important judicial records could affect the work of the State Counsel's office in the coming weeks.
The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated. However, because witnesses heard an explosion before the fire started, some people believe it may have been caused by an electrical problem or another unexpected event.
Administrative and judicial authorities who visited the scene expressed shock at the extent of the damage. Security officers secured the area while officials began assessing the losses.
The destruction of the State Counsel's Chambers is a major setback for judicial services in Manyu Division, especially as courts are handling many legal and administrative cases. The loss of important files and documents may cause temporary delays in court proceedings and administrative work.
The people of Mamfe and court users gathered at the scene, watching as thick smoke rose from the destroyed building.
Investigations continue, meanwhile workers and others users are urging authorities to quickly restore judicial services and provide temporary office space so that justice services can continue without major disruption.
As of the time of reporting, no injuries or deaths had been recorded.
