The Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu, has donated several cartons of dates to the Muslim community in Old Town, Bamenda, in support of the ongoing Ramadan fast.
The donation was handed over on Saturday, March 7, 2026, by the Mayor of Bamenda II Council, Peter Chenwi, who represented the Minister during the ceremony.
Speaking during the handover, Mayor Chenwi explained that the donation is a yearly gesture from the Minister aimed at supporting Muslim faithful during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to him, the dates are meant to help Muslims break their fast with ease, as they are known to provide much-needed energy at dusk when the fast is broken and at dawn when the day’s fasting begins.
The Mayor also commended the Muslim community of Old Town for maintaining a spirit of peace and truth during the challenging moments of the Anglophone crisis. He encouraged them, under the leadership of the Sarki of Old Town and the Imams, to continue praying for peace, prosperity, and development in the municipality and in Cameroon as a whole.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim clerics, Imam Moustapha described Ramadan as a period characterized by charity, generosity, and the sharing of love.
He expressed gratitude to Minister Felix Mbayu for his continuous support to the Muslim community.
“If somebody gives you even 25 francs, it is not the value of the money that matters, but the heart behind it. Ramadan is a time when such acts of generosity are encouraged,” Imam Moustapha said.
Also speaking during the ceremony, the Sarki of Old Town, Ousman Hamza, praised the Minister for the gesture and explained that fasting during Ramadan is compulsory for Muslim faithful who are of age, mentally sound, and in good health.
He noted that the Sarki’s palace in Old Town hosts between 100 and 150 people every evening for the breaking of the fast.
The Sarki further expressed appreciation for the donation, noting that it comes at a crucial time as Muslims prepare to enter the last ten days of Ramadan, which are considered the most spiritually significant period of the fast.
He added that the dates will also be distributed to other mosques within Bamenda and across Mezam Division.
Muslim faithful in Cameroon and across the world are currently observing the 18th day of Ramadan.
