At the CAMTEL Club in Yaounde, pride and celebration filled the air on March 8, 2026, as staff of Cameroon Telecommunications gathered to mark the 41st edition of the International Women’s Day.
Addressing the women, the General Manager of CAMTEL, Judith Yah Sunday Epouse Achidi, praised the role of women in the company and highlighted their growing contribution to Cameroon’s digital transformation.
Speaking to staff, guests, and the women she affectionately described as the "Amazons of CAMTEL,” she said the celebration of March 8 is much more than a routine event for the company.
According to her, the day offers an opportunity to reflect on the progress made in promoting gender equality while recognizing the important role women play in building a more inclusive and innovative workplace.
“International Women’s Day is both a moment of recognition and a call to action,” she noted, adding that women across the world continue to work with determination, often quietly, to build more just and balanced societies.
At CAMTEL, women are increasingly taking their place at the heart of the company’s leadership and operations.
The General Manager pointed out that since December 14, 2018, CAMTEL has been led by a woman following a presidential decree appointing her to head the national telecommunications company.
Beyond this symbolic leadership, she said many women today occupy key strategic positions across the enterprise.
According to figures she presented, CAMTEL currently has one female inspector, six female directors, nearly fifty women serving as sub-directors, department heads and regional representatives, alongside hundreds of women working as service heads, engineers, technicians and professionals in support services.
These women, she noted, are at the frontline of efforts to expand Cameroon’s telecommunications infrastructure and digital services.
Despite these achievements, Judith Yah Sunday Epouse Achidi acknowledged that challenges remain, as some societal stereotypes continue to limit opportunities for women in certain sectors.
She encouraged women to continue asserting themselves through competence, dignity and perseverance.
The theme of the 2026 lnternational Women’s Day, “Rights, Justice, Action: For All Women and Girls," also guided her message.
She explained that rights within CAMTEL mean ensuring that women have equal access to training, professional development and leadership opportunities.
Justice, she said, must be reflected in fair recognition of merit, equal career progression and the fight against discrimination in all forms.
And action, she added, involves preparing women for the future of technology and ensuring that they are active participants in the digital transformation of the country.
To support this vision, the company intends to strengthen mentorship programmes aimed at helping young female recruits grow into the engineers, experts and leaders of tomorrow.
CAMTEL is also working to bridge the digital gender gap through initiatives such as the “CAMTEL Digital Women” programme, which has already trained thousands of young girls in digital skills including coding and cybersecurity.
“Connecting a woman means connecting a family and accelerating the national economy,” the General Manager emphasized.
She also reminded staff of the importance of integrity and professionalism, warning that acts such as fraud or misuse of company resources undermine the credibility and progress of the institution.
The General Manager further praised the remarkable work of CAMTEL’s female engineers, many of whom are involved in the rollout of 4G and 5G networks as well as the expansion of the national optical fibre backbone.
Seeing women manage critical infrastructure such as data centres and fibre networks, she said, is clear evidence that talent and performance not gender define excellence.
As the ceremony drew to a close, Judith Yah Sunday Epouse Achidi encouraged the women of CAMTEL to remain confident and ambitious, reminding them that their resilience and expertise are key drivers of the company’s success.
