Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) has taken a decisive step toward redefining its place in the country’s digital landscape through a new three-year Master Service Agreement signed on December 4 in Yaoundé with Ethio Telecom, one of Africa’s largest state-owned telecom operators. The partnership marks a turning point in CAMTEL’s ambition to shift from a traditional connectivity provider to a key driver of Cameroon’s digital transformation.

CAMTEL’s Director General, Judith Yaah Sunday, described the agreement as a bold embrace of Africa’s responsibility to shape its own digital future. She said partnering with Ethio Telecom—a company praised for its strategic discipline and strong performance—will propel CAMTEL toward operational excellence and home-grown innovation. The accord lays out an extensive framework to modernise CAMTEL’s operations, expand its service offerings, and strengthen the national digital ecosystem.

A major component of the partnership is the diversification of CAMTEL’s digital services. This includes expanding the ‘Blue Money’ electronic payment system to bolster financial inclusion, and developing a secure Government Cloud platform to support the digitalisation of public services and safeguard national data.

The collaboration also targets rapid upgrades in network technology, including 4G, 5G, and other emerging systems, alongside internal reforms to improve organisational efficiency and customer service.

Ethio Telecom’s Director General, Frehiwot Tamiru, endorsed the holistic approach, stressing that true relevance in today’s telecom sector requires internal digital transformation as much as infrastructure expansion. She noted that her company aims to share its experience in modernising telecom operations and contribute directly to Cameroon’s economic growth.

Judith Yaah Sunday described the partnership as a “digital bridge” connecting ambition, expertise and technological solidarity. Aligned with the government’s focus on digital modernisation, the agreement represents a major step in CAMTEL’s mission to build sovereign digital services and position Cameroon at the forefront of Africa’s digital future.
