Councillors of Bamenda I Council have voted the 2026 budget balanced in income and expenditure at 1.47 billion Francs CFA.

The councillors after scrutinizing the budget gave their okay in a session held on Wednesday 17th December 2025 at the Bemenda I council hall.

While presiding the session, the Mayor of Bemenda I, Mbigha Njah Felix said the budget meets the needs of the population of the subdivision.

Some of the priority projects as well as institutions that will benefit Bamenda I include the gas plant at Ntahfubuh, the modern stadium complex at Atogulah constructed by the United Nations Development Program, digitalized civil status centre to be controlled by solar energy constructed by UNDP, the paving of the road from prison junction to the council and to the Bamenda I Council market by C2D, the ongoing construction of a market at the cattle market.

The 1.47 billion budget has 828.3 million for investment and 644.9 million Francs for recurrent expenditure.

Mayor Mbigha Felix and his councillors decried the ongoing haphazard construction in some areas of Bamenda I. The council as at now is not charged with the collection of building permits which greatly hampers its control of the situation.

"Just imagine that we have a fire outbreak when people have virtually constructed on the road. Development is good but must be done in an orderly manner." Mayor Mbigha said.

Mezam SDO, Simon Emile Mooh speaking on the subject said this issue will be addressed alongside the city council.

"It is very wrong to have a city where people build what they like without proper documentation. The city council and the subdivisional councils have to work together on this and address the situation without delay. Councillors should also report any construction works ongoing in their respective constituencies." The SDO said.

The 2026 budget is the first programmed based budget of the council which takes into consideration the programmes and not the means. The budget witnesses a 300 million increment from the 2025 budget.

Mezam SDO said the budget is realistic and will meet the current challenges of the council and saluted the Mayor for all the realizations recorded over the past six years from the construction of bridges, opening of roads, getting the Bamendakwe market functional and the development of water schemes.

Other projects including the construction of classrooms, subsides to schools, equipment of a literacy center, opening of farm to market roads, extension of electricity, finishing works on the Nkar health center are highlights of the 2026 budget.
