Regional elections in Cameroon will take place on November 30, with an interesting twist in the North West House of Chiefs.
The House of Chiefs which acts as the Upper House in the North West Regional Assembly, gets a second reading of every deliberation passed at the House of Divisional Representatives.
The House is made up of 20 members elected from across the seven Divisions of the North West.
While the House of Divisional Representatives have only one list per Division, the House of Chiefs have multiple lists in several Divisions.
Boyo, Bui and Ngoketunjia presented just a single list meanwhile in Mezam, Momo, Donga Mantung and Menchum, the Fons will be criss-crossing their Divisions to canvass for votes.
Only traditional authorities (1st, 2nd and 3rd class) who have been gazetted are allowed to take part in the elections of the House of Chiefs.
In Mezam, the Fon of Mankon, Nkwen and Akum were elected to the House of Chiefs in 2020. Unfortunately the Fons of Mankon and Akum could not see their mandates through as they both 'disappeared'.
In 2025, three lists have been presented. One headed by the Fon of Mankon and member of the CPDM Central Committee, Fru Asah Angwafo IV. The Fon of Mankon is seeking to sit on the stool at the House of Chiefs where his father sat. The charismatic Fon who has gained public admiration since ascending the throne, a little over two years ago, is heading a list which consists of the Fons of Bamendakwe, HRM Fon Nfongwa Amah Georges, who host the seat of the House of Chiefs and Fon Awemo Charles of Bambili, seat of the University of Bamenda.
The list of Fo Fru Asah Angwafo IV will receive a serious threat from the list of His Royal Majesty, Fon Doh Ganyonga III of Bali.
Fon Doh himself a former Senator who spent 10 years at the Upper House of Parliament has Fon Funwie Stanley Ngufor of Nkwen and Fon Paul Fozoh III of Awing. Fon Funwie Stanley of Nkwen is an incumbent and Head of the committee on Finance, infrastructure, planning, Economic Development at the House of Chiefs.
The first two lists are headed by the first class Fons.
The third list is Headed by Fon Viyuoh Nelson of Kedjom Ketinguh. The finance expert and second class Fon has been largely reserved, focusing his attention on the development of his village. This time, he seeks to be part of the decision making table. He is supported by Fon Ganitious Mbigha Ngufor and Fon Suh Elvis Neba of Mbakong Village in Bafut subdivision.
Some big names expected to make their comeback to the Regional Assembly include Fon Ndi Clement Mbain who heads the lone list from Boyo and is the paramount Fon of Kom. Another first class Fon expected is His Royal Majesty Fon Wirba Mbinglo Patrick, Paramount Fon of Nso.
The current President of the House of Chiefs, Fon Yakum Kevin Teuvih is heading the lone list from Ngoketunjia and he is expected to have a second mandate in the House of Chiefs.
The executive bureau of the House of Chiefs is made up of a President and Secretary.
The incumbent House Secretary, Fon Bahmbi III Mathias is facing two other lists. One headed by Fon Ju Wilson of Koshing and another by Ardo Mamah Mohamadu.
