Bafut Elites Distribute Free Health Vouchers to Reduce Maternal Mortality

Donation of the 200 Health Vouchers in Bafut Subdivision

Elites of Bafut extraction have distributed 200 vouchers to pregnant women in the subdivision.

The vouchers which were distributed on August 22nd, covers antenatal consultations, safe deliveries and postnatal care up to 42 days after birth.

The distribution of the health vouchers which falls in line with the Universal Health coverage, seeks to ensure that every pregnant woman in Bafut receives adequate healthcare and a close follow-up of their pregnancies.

Hon Akongwa Helen Ngwa, Alternate Member of Parliament for Bafut/ Tubah Constituency, emphasized the need for the vouchers.

"We don't want to see pregnant women or babies die again. We are here to wipe their tears."

The situation of access to quality health care was rife in the subdivision during the hay days of the Anglophone crisis as Bafut became one of the hotspots. Frequent ghost towns and road blockage prevented pregnant and sick women from assessing hospitals, relying only on traditional midwives.

The campaign by the elites of Bafut came as a relief measure to the mothers.

"I struggled to pay for antenatal visits. Now I can focus on preparing for my baby. This initiative has lifted a heavy burden off my shoulders." Ngwa Salome said.

Another beneficiary, Gwen Zenobia, who lost her husband during the crisis said the vouchers are essential. "I hardly had money for hospital visits. These vouchers are a huge relief. I am grateful to my brothers and sisters who made this possible." Madam Zenobia said.
             Mayor Chesi Lum Miriam

Some of the locally elected leaders who spearheaded the campaign have pledged to continually support this initiative. Chesi Lum Miriam, First Deputy Mayor of Bafut Council, hailed the initiative: “This is my way of giving life to the next generation. I applaud the vision bearers. This is just the beginning.” The Deputy Mayor said.

            Hon Chebelem Gordon Anyele

To Hon. Chebelem Gordon Anyele, member of the North West Regional Assembly, this idea warrants that more Bafut elites and development partners should come together to expand the program: “Every pregnant woman in Bafut, no matter her income or circumstance, deserves a safe delivery." Hon Chebelem said.

Organized under the auspices of the Regional Delegate for Public Health, North West, Dr. Ambe Lionel, he stressed that; "No woman should give birth at home because of lack of resources. This initiative is a step towards saving lives and reshaping health practices. He also called on the women to attend regular antenatal sessions for close follow-up."

The Regional Delegate also hinted that the vouchers will also cover women with complicated pregnancies and those who put to birth through cesarian section.

To Dr Nde Ignatius, Director of Bafut District Hospital, "many women stayed away from the hospital due to transport costs. These vouchers are directly going to reduce maternal and infant mortality."

The Bafut district hospital has also placed mobile midwives in the community to do a close follow up.

The donation of the health vouchers opens a new leaf in Bafut subdivision where the lives of Babies and their mothers are protected. The lead campaigner, Chebelem Gordon Anyele has promised to mobilized his friends and partners for a continuation of the exercise.
