World Cup 2026: Round of 32 Takes Shape as South Africa Makes History

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is entering its knockout phase, with several nations already securing their places in the newly expanded Round of 32 as the group stage draws to a close across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Traditional football powerhouses have once again underlined their credentials. Defending champions Argentina progressed comfortably after a 2-0 victory over Austria, continuing their impressive campaign under the leadership of Lionel Messi. France also booked their place in the knockout rounds after a commanding 3-0 win over Iraq to finish top of their group.

Brazil maintained one of the most remarkable records in World Cup history by advancing from the group stage once again. The five-time world champions secured qualification with a convincing 3-0 victory over Scotland, extending their perfect record of reaching the knockout stages in every World Cup they have contested.

The tournament's co-hosts have also enjoyed a successful group stage campaign. Mexico emerged as one of the standout performers, finishing top of Group A with a perfect nine points from three matches. The United States and Canada also advanced, ensuring all three host nations remain in contention for the title.

Among the biggest stories of the tournament has been the historic achievement of South Africa. Bafana Bafana reached the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history after defeating South Korea 1-0 in Monterrey.

The decisive moment came in the 63rd minute when Thapelo Maseko finished calmly into the bottom corner following a low cross from substitute Tshepang Moremi. The goal proved enough to secure second place in Group A and send Hugo Broos' side into the Round of 32.

South Korea dominated possession with 68 percent of the ball but struggled to break down a disciplined South African defence marshalled by captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The Asian side's manager, Hong Myung-bo, came under scrutiny after leaving captain Son Heung-min on the bench for the first half. Although the Tottenham star was introduced after the break, he was unable to inspire a comeback.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among South African players and supporters, marking a landmark moment in the nation's football history. South Africa will now face Canada in Los Angeles in the Round of 32, while Mexico advances as group winners.

Elsewhere, Morocco continued its impressive rise on the world stage by securing qualification for the knockout rounds, while Switzerland also confirmed its place among the final 32 teams.

Norway emerged as another surprise package, producing an impressive campaign highlighted by a statement victory inspired by striker Erling Braut Haaland. Bosnia and Herzegovina also boosted its chances of progression with a crucial final-day win and is expected to advance as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams.

With the group stage nearing completion, the confirmed list of Round of 32 qualifiers includes Argentina, Brazil, France, Mexico, the United States, Canada, South Africa, Morocco, Switzerland, and Norway, among others.

As the competition shifts into the knockout rounds, the battle for football's biggest prize is set to intensify, with established giants and emerging challengers alike dreaming of lifting the World Cup trophy on North American soil.
