The Mayor of the Bamenda II council, Chenwi Peter has called on parents to ensure that all schools within the Municipality open their doors for the 2023/2024 academic year.
The Mayor was speaking as he handed didactic materials to schools, pupils and students.
Schools in the urban perimeter of the Bamenda II council are fully functional but in the peripheries, it is an eye-saw.
He used the back-to-school donation to solicit to quarter heads to ensure that the doors of these schools are open and can receive students come September 4th.
"The only thing we have been exporting from the North West is education. Education is a must. We must ensure that these kids go to school to become what we are today. It is only possible through education." Mayor Chenwi told the Observer.
The distribution came a day after some 103 youths ended their holiday jobs at the Bamenda II council.
Financed by the North West Regional Assembly under the peace and Development Initiative, the young people were engaged to keep the streets clean and open blocked gutters.
A job rated satisfactory by the Commissioner for Economic Development at the North West Regional Assembly, Ghejung Awunti. He saluted the efforts put in by the young people and encouraged them to put even double such efforts when schools resume next Monday.
The representative of the Buyam Sellams, Madam Titachu and the representative of the persons living with Disabilities, Ngalle Richard all saluted the initiative of the Mayor to constantly look at the problems of the denizens of the Bamenda II.
Ngalle Richard emphasized that new buildings constructed in the Municipality are not inclusive and those with mobility impairment cannot access them.
A plea re-echoed by Ghejung Awunti who said something urgent should be done.
The aspect of donating books to school going children in Bamenda II has been going on for three years now. Mayor Chenwi says no child should be left behind in the educational process. For, the future lies on education.
